Position Summary

The Associate Director of Recreation and Wellness is responsible for the management and implementation of comprehensive programs that promote student health, fitness, and wellness. The position will provide leadership to the Student Activities Center, Fitness facility operations and outdoor recreation facilities such as the challenge course. Additionally, the Associate Director will supervise program staff and coordinate the development and implementation of department program initiatives in the areas of Intramural Sports, Outdoor Adventures, Group Exercise, and general health, fitness, and wellness to enhance student life on campus. The position will work with staff and faculty throughout the University to promote student development and support retention efforts. The incumbent must maintain appropriate industry related professional licenses and / or certifications including but not limited to First Aid and CPR / AED.

• 3-5 years of experience in campus recreation at the collegiate level including personnel management and facility management in campus recreation. Must have demonstrated experience in administrative development, budgeting and finance management, strategic planning, policy development, and assessment.
• Desired qualifications include First Aid & CPR Instructor Certification and a nationally recognized certification from CPRP, ACSM, NSCA or comparable, and hold appropriate professional memberships in the field.

Minimum Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree desired in Recreation and Leisure Services, Student Affairs / Higher Education, Physical Education, Exercise Physiology, Health, Sports Management or related field

Responsibilities Summary

• Manage the daily business operations of the Student Activities Center Fitness Center, including member services; staffing; equipment maintenance, repair, and inventory; custodial support; facility-use policy enforcement; and risk and emergency management. Review and recommend policies and procedures that are consistent with Student Activities Center and University policies. Ensure completion of daily deposit reports and compliance with University cash handling procedures.
• Provide leadership and direction in providing and maintaining a student development model for student assistants and graduate assistants who work in the department and the Fitness Center facility to have opportunities for learning through challenge course facilitation, CPR certification, personal training instruction, and other training and development opportunities.
• Manage the delivery of the department’s campus recreation program, to include fitness & wellness; group exercise; personal training; intramural and club sports; informal recreation; outdoor adventure programs; and the challenge course. Design and coordinate inclusive programming that excites and encourages student participation from diverse populations. Develop campus-wide programming for students, faculty, and staff to engage in fitness and wellness education and activities such as healthy trails, 5K fun runs/walks, nutrition talks, health fairs, and healthy living sessions. Support university-wide initiatives such as Welcome Week and Homecoming by coordinating appropriate recreation, fitness, and wellness activities. Provide leadership for department marketing efforts to promote department programs and university initiatives.
• Assist with department assessment efforts, including the development of learning outcomes for student and graduate assistants and department programs; collecting demographic data on student participation in department initiatives; and using predictive analytic data to inform department initiatives and programming to understand the effects of student programming on student development, retention, and success.
• Support the Director with the overall management of the Department of Recreation and Wellness by assisting with administrative projects and initiatives including establishing strategic and measureable learning outcomes, staff supervision and development, budgeting, community relations, and creating an environment that is safe, fun, engaging, and meets the needs of participants at all levels of health, fitness, and wellness.
• Builds a positive rapport with students, staff, and faculty by maintaining availability, visibility, and collegiality; Collaborate across the Division of Student Affairs and University to align programming efforts with the goals and plans needed to promote student involvement, student development, and retention.
• Participate in Division, University, and University System of Georgia (USG) committees and special projects.
